Motorola gets back to the 3rd spot in the Lighthouse Telecoms Index

Lighthouse Telecoms Index - August 2008Motorola has managed to sneak back into the 3rd spot this month. The analyst focus on its acquisition of AirDefense and its better than expected second quarter results have helped it to improve its score this month and edge out Ericsson to get the 3rd spot.

The biggest mover this month is PTC (Polska Telefonia Cyfrowa), which has shot up 13 positions. The firm has announced that it has successfully met its second quarter 2008 targets and is anticipating another quarter of strong growth. Ciena has also shot up 8 positions this month: the firm’s Indian research and development center has been awarded the Smart Workplace Award. The firm is implementing the next generation 40 Gbps network for Sprint along with Cisco and it will be interesting to see whether this project helps to make its profile more popular among analysts in the future.

The biggest decline this month is the ranking of Vanco who ranking has dropped down 15 positions. The firm has been acquired by India’s Reliance Globalcom in May and we may see a further decline in the coming months as its brand weakens after the acquisition. Cable & Wireless has also dropped down 8 positions and is now ranked at 43rd. The firm has entered into a partnership with Sybase allowing it exclusive worldwide rights to market and sell mobile data-roaming services. However, this partnership has not yet resulted in any apparent improvement in the firm’s profile with analysts this month.
